Dear Academy Graduates & Honorary Members,

It is with great sympathy that I pass on the news of the passing of an Academy Graduate, Vernon V. Speese.  Vernon was a Forensic Technician with the Blacksburg Police Department & a graduate of the 64th Session of the VA Forensic Science Academy.  He is survived by his wife & two children.  I am unaware of the details, but from what I am told, he recently had surgery for a stomach ailment.  Sunday, September 7, 2008, while at home, he was experiencing some complications and was being taken to the hospital to get checked when he passed in route.

Vernon was in attendance of the Annual Retraining last month; below is a picture for those of you who may not recall who he is.

We will forward information along as we receive it. We were not able to get any further information on what the family needs. We were told by Captain Gay (Blacksburg PD) from Nancy (Vernon's wife) that Vernon was not big on flowers. Blacksburg Police Department is going to be taking up a collection within the department to assist Vernon's family. If your department or you, as an individual, would loike to send something to the family it can be done so through the Blacksburg Police Department.
